This tour explores one of Northern Italy's best kept secrets, only 1 hour from Milan - the Renaissance capital of the formerly independent Monferrato state, Casale Monferrato. The rulers of this region permitted Jews to settle here and in other areas of their dominion (such as Mantua and Sabbioneta). The tour start with the magnificent Baroque synagogue together with a member of the community, which although tiny in number manages to organize numerous cultural events throughout the year. After having toured the synagogue, the tour continues through the surrounding former ghetto before heading up into the nearby vineyard-covered hills - the region is renown for its Barbera and Grignolino wines, with some kosher wine production as well. |
